What you will experience

On this snowshoe hike you will go to the official border markers between Norway and Russia. It is the only guided snowshoe hike to the border in Norway.

We pick you up in Kirkenes and drive about 15 minutes to the starting point. There you will be provided with snowshoes, poles and a short introduction. No previous experience is necessary.

The loop is around 3 km. It goes through snow-covered birch forest and over open tundra down to the frozen Pasvik River. From the riverbank you can see the Boris Gleb Church on the Russian side. Around 200 years ago the church was important in determining where the border was drawn. At the border markers you are right next to the cleared border road between the two countries.

At a viewpoint we take a break with a hot drink and something to eat. The guide tells about the Cold War and what it is like to live on the border today. If the group wants, we continue up to Russe Høgda. From there you can see the entire border area and Storskog, the only official border crossing between Norway and Russia.

In the summer we walk the same route. That trip is featured in a report in BBC Travel.
