The Norwegian "sparken" is a small sled with steel skis, usually shaped like a chair with handles. The sparken moves on hard-packed snow by kicking it with one foot, much like a scooter. The sparken is excellent for carrying a passenger or goods on the seat, which is made of wood. You can reach speeds of 15-20 km per hour on the flat and much more downhill.
The kick scooter has a solid place in Norwegian cultural history. It is far from just a toy, but at least as much a practical means of transportation for most people in winter. Both young and old can use the kick scooter without any special training. You regulate your own speed and get good balance on what can often be an excessively slippery surface to walk on. However, the kick scooter does not like sand and asphalt, it can only be used on snow. In Kirkenes you can rent your own kick scooter at the tourist office or from local activity providers.
