On January 15th of each year, the sun returns to Kirkenes after a long period of darkness. Many people look forward to the official sun day, which is often celebrated with sun buns and cocoa combined with a trip to see the sun in a suitable place. January is a cold period in Kirkenes, and in 2018 the temperature crept all the way down to -33 degrees when the schoolchildren at Sandnes School were on this year's sun excursion. That didn't stop them in any way. The children in Kirkenes know how to dress well and have long experience with cold and snow. In Finnmark, the sun is below the horizon for almost two months. During that period, the light often comes in the form of beautiful colors on the horizon and northern lights in the sky at night. But once the sun returns, all hearts rejoice and let the light take over more and more of the day.
